Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Review/Comments section)
Well, I have to admit that I have read all of the previous Harry Potter books. I think what makes this series of books such good reading for all ages is that everyone can associate with the characters in a different way, almost looking at the characters in the book as you would look at them as if it was the kids next door you were reading about.
If you are a young child, you look at Harry Potter from the younger/admiring viewpoint. The big brother or uncle or neighbor that you are proud to know and be associated with. The characters are easy to associate with from this level. You may associate with any of the younger characters.
If you are a tween or teen, you associate to the main characters as if they are your peers and probably question the decisions they make and their adventures. You base it on your life experience so far and the main (good) characters would all be welcome in your circle of friends. You may associate to any of the main characters.
And finally as an adult/parent. You too look at the main characters as the “kids on the street”, or nephews and nieces, or even your own kids. The good kids who are curious as all kids can be, but good kids who you like to watch grow up and see how they change. You expect them to turn out to be nice young individuals and feel pride in knowing them when they do something nice or good. You read the book as if you are Professor Dumbledore or one of the other teachers who watch out for the students.
I get a kick out of the characters. I find that for some reason Ron reminds me of Calvin (from Calvin and Hobbes). Not sure what it is. His older brothers are very similar to Dennis the Menace (trouble, but good kids). I think we all went to school with someone very similar to Hermoine. The kid who is not only talented, but applies herself/himself to excel in everything (it still amazes me how much energy and determination these people still have as adults!) And finally, Harry. I think he is the Charlie Brown reloaded. The unfortunate young kid who was always a bit awkward, but you really want to see him succeed (get a good kick, or get his kite down). With Harry, you can see what Charlie Brown might be like if he had that extra little talent (if he could throw a killer curve ball?). I think seeing his character succeed, makes you feel good.
Now, for the purpose of this post. I have not yet finished reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, but would like comments from all readers. Young and old regarding the book. Please send in your comments using the comment area and I will post them to the site.
In the future, I might start doing a giveaway for comments to my site. I may even go back to previous posts, so don’t be shy.
In addition, if your kids attended a Harry Potter release party and you want to share your pictures, you can always submit them to the OttawaFamilyFun Photo Gallery.
